The Key Differences
- Format: TOEFL is fully computer-based with multiple-choice answers; IELTS Academic offers paper or computer testing and includes a face-to-face speaking interview.
- Speaking: IELTS speaking is with a real examiner; TOEFL speaking is recorded and scored.
- Accents: TOEFL leans North American; IELTS uses a range of accents including British and Australian.
- Scoring: IELTS uses bands from 0–9; TOEFL is scored out of 120.
